Superpowers Are Testing International Law | Mr. Geopolitics

At the beginning of August, Mexico’s president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, made an unusual move. As she prepares to lead Mexico, representing a core pillar of US economic and national security, Sheinbaum has invited one of America’s biggest adversaries to her upcoming inauguration in October: the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

What makes the situation shocking is that Mexico is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued an arrest warrant for Putin and his inner circle over the war in Ukraine. This means that, technically, as an ICC member, Mexico is required to arrest Putin if he steps onto Mexican soil.

As Ukraine and the EU urge this, the current Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador or AMLO, Sheinbaum’s mentor, has squashed such talk saying quite simply “We can’t do that.”

The Kremlin is yet to comment.
